Michelle learned the value of hard work at an early age, and she started babysitting at age 9 to help her single mother pay bills. She also bussed tables, made pizzas at Mr. Gatti’s and served her classmates on Friday nights after football games.
Michelle studied accounting and business administration in college, but life happened and she did not finish her degree. That’s one reason why Michelle feels like she has accomplished more than most would expect. Her experiences have been self-taught through her ambition and efforts, and her drive to educate herself on the job at hand.
Michelle worked at MD Anderson Hospital in Nursing Staff Services, alongside the Assistant Director of Nursing.
When Michelle got married, she left that job to work with her husband in their chiropractic clinic. Her duties included insurance and billing, coding, keeping up with legislation that was affecting patient care, the Chiropractic profession, and insurance regulations...including Medicare and worker comp. She also did marketing and PR for the clinic, bringing it to the forefront of our community. Together they won GCDN Readers’ Choice in the past and were been recognized in other ways for their contribution to the community. When Michelle’s late husband died, she continued to successfully operate the clinic. Definitely an accomplishment since she was not a licensed practitioner.
During the course of her marriage, Michelle earned her Paralegal Certification and completed the program with 4.0 GPA. After graduation, she landed a job in the Galveston City Attorney office.
Michelle and her husband bought the strip center when she successfully crafted the winning bid at auction. The property had been abandoned and had vagrants living in it. One building had never been built out and was just a shell. Michelle has built that place from the ground up and put a viable and functioning property back on the tax rolls.
She later worked for the Lone Star Performing Arts Association doing Sponsor procurement and special events. Michelle dealt with high profile corporate and local sponsors, and helped build numerous successful summer seasons at the Galveston Island Outdoor Musicals.
Michelle negotiated the first VA Clinic location on the Island and worked directly with the General Contractor on the buildout of the project.
She almost single handedly rebuilt 33,000 ft2, 2.8 acres of strip center following Hurricane Ike, hiring and overseeing contractors and permitting for the project.
Michelle is a partner in a small development project on the Island. The project included working with the US Army Corp of Engineers and working in and around over 10 acres of federally protected wetlands. The project successfully established 20 lots and still has room for 6 more. She put land and homes on the tax rolls!
Following Hurricane Ike, Michelle was one of six approved real estate professionals approved by Commissioners Court to work with the Housing recipients in the HOP program. She dealt directly with the contractors...Horne, URS, and Metric Engineering...as well as the GLO in helping procure new housing for those families devastated by Hurricane Ike.
